Testing Out Kindle’s Publishing Abilities
rummil Wednesday, November 21, 2007 03:20 AM PDT

So tonight I decided to test out the publishing abilities of the Kindle network. First and foremost I needed to get a pad of paper and a pencil to write a little short story. I got the short story done in a little under an hour and quickly filled in all the required info to submit it to the Kindle Publisher’s program. Now you can’t give away something for free on Kindle because that’s how Amazon pays for it’s EVDO Whispernet. The minimum price you can set is 25 cents so I did. I’m not out to profit from this short story but who knows, in the future I wouldn’t mind too much.

Surviving Black Friday

Below you’ll find some useful tips and strategies that I used in the past to get my way at various retailers.

Getting Help at Best Buy
Even during the off-season it is almost impossible to get help at Best Buy. The best thing to do is start out by heading toward the high-ticket items (laptops). Eyeball the most expensive laptop and look like you’re in need of assistance. When a sales associate approaches you tell them that you’re thinking about getting this laptop but you’ll also need 4 accessories to go with it (this is where they make money), and you would like them to help you getting the product that you actually want. In order to get that laptop sale with accessories they’ll escort you around the store to where you’d like to go and help you get everything else that you needed. When you’ve gotten what you need simply say thanks and proceed to the 3 hour cash register line. They’ll probably insist that you walk back over to the computer department to be checked out at the Mobile register. At that point simply tell them that you’ve had second thoughts about the laptop purchase and that you don’t want to get it today.

Here’s the problem with Best Buy: Normal associates aren’t commissioned but their managers are. Because of that you then have a situation where the associates only want to please their manager even if that means neglecting certain customers completely. Of course I understand the need for associates to make big sales but there is a larger portion of customers making smaller sales that are getting neglected almost all the time.

The Rundown

Rescue Time is a tool that you would think by the name would enable you to rescue up some time that you’ve wasted. Of course no software could really rescue your time. It comes down to whether or not you are willing to sacrifice the time watching videos on YouTube to get some freelance work done. What you can expect is an adverse effect. You’ll be drawn into the graphs and various statistics. After a couple days you’ll realize that you’re spending more and more time of Rescue Time’s website.

PayPal Not So Secure Card
rummil

Tomorrow PayPal is going to release a new feature that enables users to purchase items online from any Merchant’s site by generating a secure and unique MasterCard number. PayPal users will have to download a plugin to use this ‘new’ feature . PC users with Firefox or Internet Explorer will have full access to PayPal’s new feature. If you have a MAC you’ll only have limited access through Safari (it’s probably for your own good).

Mahalo Daily - Deep Fried Turkey
rummil

Normally I wouldn’t post about such an off topic item so this one is destined for the “Warm & Fuzzy” section.

Deep frying a Turkey is perhaps the best way to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. Mmm, just the thought of the succulent meat… this is why I’m only a vegetarian part time. If you’ve never deep fried a Turkey I wouldn’t recommend it this time around because you’ll need time to practice so you don’t overdue it and/or turn your backyard into a raging inferno (it has almost happened before).
